Issue No. 59 - Winter 2011

On January 13th, members of the Saskatchewan Soil Conservation Association from across the province will be attending our annual general meeting and conference at the Saskatoon Inn, in Saskatoon.

The conference is now a one-day event held during Crop Week We hope SSCA members and other farmers will find the conference fits their plans to attend Crop Week and the Western Canadian Crop Production Show Registration on January 13th begins at 8:00am which may accommodate those who chose to travel to Saskatoon on Thursday morning.

Issue No. 58 - Winter 2010

SSCA will be hosting the Conservation Agriculture 2010 Conference at Evraz Place in Regina on February 9 and 10.

There has been a major trend towards conservation agriculture around the world with the South Americans, Australians and western Canadians leading the way. In keeping with this theme, Argentine no till expert, Roberto Pieretti is this year's keynote speaker. South American agriculture has embraced no-till systems to a greater extent than on the Canadian Prairies with over 80% adoption. While their farming systems are different than those used here, Roberto will discuss how we can incorporate some of their principles into our systems.

Saskatchewan farmers have heard a lot about greenhouse gas emissions in relation to soil carbon storage.

But do they know the bottom line for these emissions on their own farms? Do they have a feel for the specific emission and storage numbers for different areas of their operations? There is a solution! A greenhouse gas emissions computer model has been developed for producers that can answer these questions for individual farms.
