“Understanding Soil Variability”
This will provide a bit of background and a case study to demonstrate the variability of our glaciated prairie soils and its impact on crop yield and field management. The case study that I will present is a field that is owned by the U of S and which the class soil sampled - a field that is significantly affected by salinity. This then leads to discussion of soil variability = crop variability = fertilizer requirement variability and weed control, and then to some discussion of the need to better focus on our ‘best land’ in each field and accept that some land should be seeded to grass. It is about soil conservation, (soil) diversity, and the need to better use our soil and monetary resources on a farm.
